Hand Washing

A friend of mine sent me this meme, and I couldn't help but laugh.

Such an easy way to keep yourself healthy and prevent the spread of germs to others. Since the pandemic it is getting drilled into us that we need to wash our hands. As a Massage Therapist, I must say that message was drilled into me when I went to Massage Therapy School. I remember an exercise that our instructors had us do: they had the entire class go to the restrooms to wash our hands. Their instruction was simple, 'wash your hands how you normally wash your hands, don't do anything extra, just your normal hand washing routine.' The entire class was excused to go to the wash room, and when we came back to the classroom, the instructors had a special light, and they shined that light on our hands, wrists, and forearms... it was astonishing to see what lurked at nail beds, cuticles and under fingernails. Most everyone in the class was thoroughly disgusted at the now noticeable germs, skin and whatever was STILL on their hands after washing. This of course was a great segue for the instructors to give us the proper steps in thoroughly washing our hands. It seemed to be very similar to what surgeons do. We got brushes to scrub under our fingernails and around the nail beds, and figured out fun little songs to hum or sing to make sure that we got our full 20-30 seconds of good scrubbing in.
